It’s been awhile, but I figured Min Min deserved her own writeup since she is the first fighter of Fighter Pass 2!
I would’ve never guessed there would be a 2nd Fighters Pass after the 1st one if you had asked me a couple months ago. It really goes to show how much Sakurai and the Smash team want to make this game as special as possible. With Min Min added, the series represented in Smash jumps up one more and a brand new mechanic is introduced.
Min Min is quite different from any character introduced before, and as my friends would say she is “made differently.” She has the unique ability to be able to use both her arms on her body depending on if the player presses the A or B button. This intrigued me from the start, because it opened up so many possibilities in terms of how the character would work. From combo’s to zoning, Min Min boasts an impressive arsenal.
Being able to change what is equipped on Min Min’s arm with her Down B gives her even more of a way to mix up the gameplay. I have found that having Ramram on hand is very good for edgeguarding and ledgetrapping, as it snuffs out many recoveries just by throwing out the hitbox. Some characters legitimately have no way to counter the edgeguard either (and I’m not just talking about Little Mac), and have to save their jump and hope they can make it back.
Megawatt serves as more of a kill move or in few cases a combo extender. Despite being big and slow, having Megawatt on can make you’re Nair an actual kill move at higher percents and you can combo out of it at lower percent’s as well. It’s slow but has a lasting hitbox that can fly across the stage. While being less flexible than Ramram, catching someone off guard with it can cost your opponent an early stock as it’s one of the most powerful Smash attacks in the game.
Dragon is the last Down B special you can cycle, and it gives Min Min a second Dragon hand as her kit. This one I found the most underwhelming, because there are very few scenarios where you would want a 2nd Dragon hand over Ramram or Megawatt. I did find it semi useful when you have a powered up Dragon hand, which you can get by successfully grabbing and throwing someone as Min Min. The extra power and range from the Dragon laser is quite helpful, and at times it makes Min Min feel like she has an aimbot as part of her kit.
All in all from what I’ve played and seen I consider Min Min to be a Mid Mid tier to to High Mid Tier. I don’t believe she has the tools or frame data to be able to consistently contend with High Tiers, but I do believe she has enough going for her that she won’t fall into the bottom cast of characters. Her ridiculous range and zoning game can straight up shut down certain characters that have to get in to win, and her kill power is surprisingly above average. Now if only Nintendo had given her an actual DLC Up B…..
I’ll be covering Steve soon, so be on the lookout for a Steve post. If you want to see some good Min Min gameplay, I would highly recommend watching some of ESAM’s videos as he has the best Min Min in my opinion at the moment.
